Sous La Garenne" is a quiet, unspoilt location for nature lovers, 13km from Honfleur and 175km from Paris. It is set in 2 hectares of protected, unspoilt countryside overlooking the Seine Estuary. The half-timbered building, dating from the late 17th century, has been completely renovated in an environmentally-friendly manner.
Our site, in the middle of the Natural Park of the Loops of the Norman Seine, tries to be as environmentally friendly as possible while still providing the necessary well-being. That's why you won't find a microwave oven, for example. We have a Polyflam system that allows us to have a real stove that heats the whole house while still being able to have a traditional fire, which is very pleasant in winter.
We also have electric dry inertia radiators. We're counting on everyone to keep these to a minimum and, above all, not to run them with the windows open, for example, or to leave them on full blast when you leave for the day. All these small gestures help us to reduce our electricity consumption, which is supplied by Enercoop. The entire gîte has been built using eco-friendly materials, and we try to use only eco-friendly products for cleaning and maintenance.
Outside, we leave as much tall grass as possible so that all the insects and other animals can live! In permaculture, we believe that there are no weeds (thistles, nettles, etc.) and that we should leave as many areas as possible with as little human intervention as possible to encourage the return or protection of endangered species. The size of our field allows us to do this, while still having a lawn area for relaxation. For example, thistles, as well as bringing us goldfinches, produce purple flowers that are delicious in herbal teas and an excellent age-old remedy for liver ailments. The young nettle shoot soup with mint leaves is delicious! And don't forget the acacia or elderflower fritters, red saskatoon berries or borage flowers that will enhance any dish! So make the most of it !
Depending on the season, your neighbours may include frogs, owls, bats, storks, rabbits and badgers !
We hope you enjoy your stay.
